The exhibit, Determined: The 400-Year Struggle for Black Equality, is currently on display at the John J. Wright Educational & Cultural Center Museum through May 18, 2026. The exhibit is presently on loan from the Virginia Museum of History & Culture.
Commemorating the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in British North America, this exhibit traces four centuries of African American history in Virginia through the stories of extraordinary individuals whose pursuit of equality profoundly shaped American society and advanced the meaning of shared ideals of fairness.
Featuring inspirational stories of 30 individuals, this exhibit offers a powerful lens for understanding many of the foundations of today’s challenges and confronting the enduring legacies of slavery, segregation, and white supremacy. At the same time, these narratives invite visitors to leave with purpose—to become more informed, more engaged, and more determined to work toward building a more equitable future for everyone.
